Our brand new, once a year celebration of the very best wines in the world, as voted for by the great and good of the wine industry, and more importantly - YOU!!!
That feeling when you're in the supermarket, browsing the wine shelves. You're feeling bold, a little bit brave, you decide to step out of your comfort zone, buy something new, something you've never tried before. The anticipation builds as you wait for the evening, you pull the bottle of out the rack, open, pour, drink your first sip...
And it's nothing but 75cl of tear-inducing disappointment!!!
Well now it's time to do something about it! In honour of the actual Oscars on the 26th Feb we have put on this series of 3 evening tastings, sampling quite simply, the very best wines available!
So now is your chance to try something new, over the 3 evenings we'll be trying the pick of the bunch, the top medal winning wines, first of all from 2 of the most important wine competitions in the world; the International Wine Challenge and Decanter World Wine Awards, and then the most important tasting of all - the Lothian Wine School Wine Awards, as chosen by you!!!
Week 1 - International Wine Challenge
The International Wine Challenge (IWC) is now in its 33rd year. The IWC is accepted as the world's finest and most meticulously judged wine competition which assesses every wine blind and judges each for its faithfulness to style, region and vintage. Throughout the rigorous judging processes, each medal-winning wine is tasted on three separate occasions by at least 10 different judges and awards include medals (Trophy, Gold, Silver, Bronze) and Commended and Great Value awards. The Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) is the world’s largest and most influential wine competition. Judged by the world’s wine experts, the results provide a comprehensive list of wine recommendations and international stockists.
Tonight we'll be tasting 7 of the top trophy winning wines from these two competitions, from a variety of categories covering various different wine styles, grape varieties, countries and prices.
Week 2 - Wine At The Movies!
A masterclass celebrating the vinous stars of the silver screen! From Bond’s love of Bollinger, to Lecter’s unique pairings with Chianti, we’ll enjoy some of these classic unforgettable moments and learn a bit more about the wines behind them – all accompanied by the classic clips of course!
We’ll also look at some of the seminal films made about wine itself. From the cult hit 'Sideways' destruction of poor old merlot, to the dedication it takes to become a master sommelier in 'Somm', the background to one of the most elaborate frauds of all time in 'Sour Grapes' and the amazing true story of the judgement of Paris wine tasting, as immortalised in Alan Rickman's performance in 'Bottle Shock'. We'll learn the stories behind all of these hits, and taste some of these wine celebraties ourselves!
Week 3 - The Lothian Wine School Wine Awards
Over the course of the last 12 months at the wine school we have presented literally hundreds of different wines on our tastings, covering every conceivable style of wine, price point, grape and region. This very special evening celebrates the pick of those wines, the ones that have wowed us, the ones that have impressed us the most and stuck in the memory of our customers. We will taste 7 wines, and In honour of the Oscars we will be having various different awards including:
- Best Actor (Red Wine)
- Best Actress (White or Rose)
- Best Picture (The best wine of the year)
- Lifetime Acheivement Award (best fine wine over £20)
- Best Newcomer (best value wine under £7)
- Best Original Screenplay (best wine from unusual grape/region)
So come along to this very special course and enjoy some of the greatest wines on the shelves at the moment, discover something new as well as learning a bit about all of the wines and wine regions they come from.
